Tinubu vows crackdown on ‘treasonable’ IPOB after soldiers’ killing

1st June 2024

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killing of five soldiers by suspected Indigenous People of Biafra, vowing stern action against the perpetrators and those calling for a sit-at-home order.

In a statement on Saturday, Tinubu described the attack in Aba, Abia State, as an “unwarranted barbaric and evil act” that should never be tolerated in the country.

“These unwarranted barbaric and evil acts stand condemned and should never be condoned and tolerated in our country,” the president stated.

“Our soldiers and the police have the onerous duty to protect all of us from aggressors and non-state actors. Hundreds of them have paid the ultimate price in fulfillment of their duty, while some have experienced the indignity of being manhandled by the people they protect,” he added.

Tinubu vowed that the federal government would come down heavily on those who have made it a habit to attack officers and men of the armed forces. “On no account should anyone, under any guise, have the audacity to kill agents of the state,” he asserted.

The president also issued a stern warning to those calling for a sit-at-home order, labelling their actions as “nothing but a treasonable offence.”

“I urge security agencies not only to fish out the masterminds and perpetrators of the Aba attack but also those calling on people to stay at home. Their action is nothing but a treasonable offence,” Tinubu stated.

FG rejects N494,000 wage demand, warns of N9.5tn economic burden

1st June 2024

The Federal Government has declared the organised labour’s demand for a national minimum wage of N494,000 as economically unsustainable, warning it could destabilise the economy and negatively impact over 200 million Nigerians.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this during a news conference in Abuja.

In a statement signed by his media aide Rabiu Ibrahim on Saturday, Idris emphasised that the proposed minimum wage would result in an annual expenditure of N9.5 trillion, a burden he described as untenable for the nation’s finances.

According to Idris, the government’s current offer is an N60,000 minimum wage, representing a 100 per cent increase from the 2019 rate, which has been accepted by the organised private sector involved in the wage negotiations

GOV. ENO ORDERS RELOCATION

GOV ENO ORDERS RELOCATION OF OCCUPANTS OF AFFECTED AREAS AS UYO RAVINE RECLAMATION, RECREATIONAL PROJECT TAKES SHAPE

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has ordered immediate relocation of families and demolition of structures within areas of the ongoing Uyo-Ewet gully erosion reclaimation and beautification project, as the contracting firm assured that phase one of the recreational park has reached an advanced stage.

Interacting with one of the residents in the area during an unscheduled visit to the project site, the Governor directed the Commissioner for Lands, Captain Iniobong Ekong to ensure immediate relocation to enable the smooth implementation of the project plan.

He noted that beyond attacking a major gully erosion in the area, by reclaiming the once inaccessible and life-threatening ravine, government aims at creating wealth out of the waste.

The Governor toured the site, said the trees and forest within the area should be pruned to create the desired scenic atmosphere.

He expressed delight at the pace of work, which is at a very advanced stage, and assured that when completed,  children and their parents, from within and outside the State,  will have a good facility for relaxation.

Giving an insight into the project, Managing Director of the contracting firm, Bulletine Construction Company Limited, Chief Faysal Harb, noted that phase one of the recreational park,

which has a golf course, football pitch, lawn tennis court, basketball, volleyball, and Clchildren playground, among others, is taking shape.

Recall that on his first visit some months ago, the Udo Inwang Street axis of the site was completely collapsed at the Etim Okon Usanga intersection, and the governor had assured that upon completion, the  hitherto dangerous ravine will be converted to a recreational facility that will be a tourists' delight.

As at the time of the visit, the collapsed and inaccessible areas had been restored, and passable including the extension which Governor Eno had added to the contract in order to prevent the Uyo Custodial Centre from collapse.

What Akwa Ibom taught me in 24 hours

What Akwa Ibom taught me in 24 hours

Written by Dr. Dakuku Peterside

On a serene Tuesday morning, the 21st of May, my phone buzzed with a WhatsApp message that instantly warmed my heart. It was from the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, a man I consider both a brother and a friend. His invitation to celebrate his first year in office  thanksgiving service was an opportunity I eagerly embraced, driven by my affection for Akwa Ibom and my admiration for its ongoing transformation.

What I found intriguing was that beyond the exceptional landscape development and the governor's commendable efforts, I deeply felt the warmth, love, and hospitable nature of the Akwa Ibom people.

By sheer coincidence, I had four similar invitations from other Governors. However, I am deeply committed in my pursuit to celebrate worthy excellence and leadership, especially in the current global political scene where crisis prevails. Despite unexpected developments, I was determined to keep my word.

I arrived in Uyo on Saturday evening and met with some members of the Port Harcourt Golf Club. We had an unforgettable evening filled with camaraderie and reflection, which highlighted the stark contrast between the current political climate in Port Harcourt and its past—a story for another day.

On Sunday, May 26th, I rode to church with Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe, Hon. Minister of State, Petroleum (Gas). Our conversation about the political landscapes of Akwa Ibom and Rivers State was enlightening. He praised the current governor’s efforts in fostering unity and inclusiveness—my first lesson of the trip.

We arrived at the magnificent church built by former Governor Udom Emmanuel, who was also present. The service exemplified the governor’s commitment to inclusiveness, with political leaders from various backgrounds feeling genuinely welcome.

When Governor Eno spoke, his humility, confidence, and honesty were palpable. He credited past leaders and humbly confessed his sense of unworthiness, attributing his position to divine choice. His approach to adversarial cooperation and collaboration with political leaders was my second lesson. The music by the choirs during the service was soul-stirring, transporting me to distant shores.

After the service, we headed to the governor's lodge. I shared a table with Otuekong Don Etibet and Obong Umana Umana, prominent APC leaders in the state. They spoke highly of the governor’s spirit of inclusiveness. In a brief conversation, Governor Eno said, “My brother, I am so glad to have you here. My people need nothing but respect and sincerity. My role is to serve them. It is Akwa Ibom State, not Umo Eno State.” His words resonated deeply with me.

Sadly, my exploration had to come to an end on the 27th of May due to the magnitude of commitments. Although the governor’s response to my need to depart reflected his understanding, it was clear he wished for my presence at the project commissioning. As part of the activities marking his first year in office, he commissioned a new model primary health centre in Ikot Nkwo, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, and the Christ the King Model Primary School and Government School Ewet Offot. These projects are part of his strategy to modernize education and healthcare.

Governor Eno also announced an ambitious plan to recruit 200 additional health workers, a move set to significantly bolster primary healthcare services. This initiative underscores his unwavering commitment to enhancing both healthcare and education. His vision extends beyond immediate improvements, aiming to replicate this successful model across all local government areas in Akwa Ibom State.

The most profound takeaway for me is witnessing a governor who not only articulates his priorities but also actively implements them. Governor Eno's focus on education, healthcare, law and order, inclusiveness, infrastructure, and economic opportunities demonstrates a comprehensive approach to building a modern, thriving society. His actions speak volumes about his dedication to creating a better future for all.

The final lesson is leadership with the fear of God. Governor Eno, a pastor, exemplifies integrity in a way many religious leaders do not. His respectful relationship with his predecessor and the Senate President demonstrates his ability to manage diverse and conflicting relationships. With such leadership, Akwa Ibom is poised for accelerated progress in the coming years.
