Demolition: Residents of former Nitel close lead protest to Government House
...as stranded widows, tenants call on Gov. Umo Eno to revisit area
Residents of the former Nitel close along Brooks Street in Uyo have decried the sudden eviction notice and demolition of properties by the Akwa Ibom State Government.
The protesters staged a peaceful demonstration at the entrance of the Government House in Uyo on Saturday, June 1, 2024, saying that some people alleged to be from the State Ministry of Lands and Water Resources came out to write inscriptions on the walls of their buildings which reads: " Remove, Govt Land " on Friday, 31 May 2024.
The protesters who are residents of Nung Uyo community, Offot Clan of Uyo LGA (along Brooks street) expressed shock that they are asked to vacate their houses within 24 hours, having lived in the community for many years, paying rent to their respectively landlords without any issues of illegalities on the said land.
They queried the hasty moves by the Ministry of Lands without any official notice or given ample time to plan their relocation or discuss compensations with the Akwa Ibom State Government.
The residents call on Governor Umo Eno, being a compassionate leader to please revisit the matter to hear their plea and save them from becoming homeless.
Demolition of the old Nitel Building has been partly done with a part left in ruins and debris, while many adjoining houses have been earmarked for demolition.
