WE'LL CONTINUE TO INVEST IN AKWA IBOM AND OUR PEOPLE - GOV UMO ENO

... Acknowledges receipt of Palliative from FG

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reiterated the government's resolve to continuously invest in the development of the State  and its future for the greater good of the citizenry.

Speaking at the July edition of Government House monthly prayer service at the Latter House Chapel, Governor's Lodge, Uyo, he noted that every investment embarked upon by the government is well analysed to ensure good return on investments.

He said the current administration under his leadership, met a prime property in Lagos lying fallow with no revenue to the State, adding that there is need to commercialise it, especially as the real estate market is very profitable.

The State Chief Executive noted that the investment plans of the State government wouldn't stop other development projects across the State, adding, "we will continue to invest in Akwa Ibom. Every investment we are doing is carefully planned. We don't just wake up to do it. We take our time and annalise it. That's why AKICORP is there. We need to invest for our State, our future, and we are very intentional about things.

"This will not stop the rural development we are doing, but we must also know that a day will come, and maybe in the future when we will be able to reap from the investment we are doing today.

"I have said it here before, I met prime properties of this state in Lagos and Abuja. Our forebears acquired these properties, but nothing was realized from it by way of income, and in these days when any government wants its property, and they realise it is abandoned, they revoke the C of O, and when they revoke it, there is nothing you can do.

"We needed to commercialize those properties. I am not doing it in my name. It is for the State. We need to benefit from the real estate market in this country, which is very profitable, and that is why we are investing in it.

"So to be clear, we are not taking Akwa Ibom money anyway. It is Akwa Ibom people that will work there. We have Akwa Ibom people in Lagos and Abuja. So we are converting those buildings to commercial buildings. That is what we are doing, and I believe that's what you hired me to do," he added.

Governor Eno acknowledged that the State was currently benefiting from the investment plans of previous administrations, adding that efforts must be made to continuously invest in the future of the State, irrespective of the current economic hardship.

He acknowledged that the State had received 24 , 000 of 25kg bags of rice from the Federal Government, adding that the State has added another 24, 000 of 25kg bags, making it 48, 000.

The Governor, who is reputed for his compassionate disposition, said 20 bags of rice will be distributed to each of the 2,272 gazetted villages in the state.

He noted that the bulk purchase/food voucher programme was  in progress adding that government plans to step it up in August by getting involved in the purchase of the food items and redemption of food vouchers at the different local government areas.

Governor Eno, however, stressed that beyond the palliative, everyone should return to farm and key into the different agricultural support programmes of the State government to ensure food sufficiency in the State.

On the forthcoming local government elections, he appealed to stakeholders across the State to avoid heating up the polity but to respect zoning and support aspirants with the capacity to win election and deliver democracy dividends.

He appreciated everyone for attending the Monthly Prayer Service and assured that, with prayers, vision, and faith, the State will continue to remain peaceful and a land of fulfilment.

Earlier in his message, on the theme, "There remains very much land to possess," taken from Joshua 1:1-9, the guest minister, Pastor Akomaye Ugar of the Honeystreams Christian Centre said the State has more land to possess but must have faith in God and have vision with a blueprint for implementation.

Girl, 12, is charged with murder of cousin, 8, 'after suffocating the little girl with bedding after fight over iPhone'

News

A 12-year-old allegedly suffocated her cousin after the pair got into a dispute over an iPhone while at their grandmother's house.

The unidentified girl, who turns 13 next week, allegedly used bedding to suffocate Demeria Hollingsworth, eight, before cleaning up and repositioning her body on Monday, according to WREG.

'I just lost my baby, the most beautiful child of God,' Hollingsworth's mother, Rayana 'Rayy' Smith, wrote on GoFundMe. 'The pain I’m feeling is unbearable. I have to now live life without her in this crazy world.

'I never imagined anything like this would happen and now find myself trying to fund a funeral.'

Police have obtained a video of the violent act, which they say shows the 12-year-old suffocating the little girl while she was 'sleeping in the top bunk,' according to District Attorney of the 28th Judicial District, Frederick Agee.

Smith said the girls were staying with their grandmother in Humboldt, Tennessee, for the summer, and the tragedy occurred after the pair were arguing over an iPhone, WREG reported.

'When they told me about that, I should have just gone to get my kid,' she told the outlet. 'But they were having fun for the summer, and I didn’t think she would kill my baby.

'She did nothing to deserve for her life to be taken. She was only eight years old. She just turned eight in April.'

The 12-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Agee said his office will be petitioning Juvenile Judge Mark Johnson to have the child tried as an adult and transferred into the Circuit Court.

'I consider this to be one of the most disturbing violent acts committed by either an adult or juvenile that my office has prosecuted,' Agee said on Facebook.

If she is transferred, it will allow for a 'lengthier sentence, whether that will be through incarceration or supervision with court-ordered conditions,' according to Agee.

If she is tried and sentenced as a juvenile, the court will lose jurisdiction over her once she turns 19, and therefore, 'the juvenile would be free from any further detention, supervision, or court-ordered mental health treatment.'

A service will be held for  Hollingsworth on July 26, according to the GoFundMe.

A Russian court found U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich guilty of espionage charges on Friday and jailed him for 16 years

A Russian court found U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich guilty of espionage charges on Friday and jailed him for 16 years, Russian news agencies reported, in a case his employer, the Wall Street Journal, has called a sham.

Gershkovich, a 32-year-old American who said the allegations against him were false, went on trial last month in the city of Yekaterinburg. He was the first U.S. journalist arrested on spying charges in Russia since the Cold War.

Espionage cases often take months to handle and the unusual speed at which his trial was held behind closed doors - Friday's hearing was only the third in the trial - has stoked speculation that a long-discussed U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange deal involving him and potentially other Americans detained in Russia may be in the offing.

The Kremlin, when asked by Reuters on Friday about the possibility of such an exchange, declined to comment: "I'll leave your question unanswered," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Russian prosecutors had alleged that Gershkovich had gathered secret information on the orders of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency about a company that manufactures tanks for Moscow's war in Ukraine, which he and his employer denied.

Officers of the FSB security service arrested him on March 29, 2023, at a steakhouse in Yekaterinburg, 900 miles (1,400 km) east of Moscow. He has since been held in Moscow's Lefortovo prison.

Earlier on Friday, the court hearing the case had unexpectedly said it would pronounce its verdict within hours after state prosecutors demanded he be jailed for 18 years for spying.

The maximum sentence for the crime he is accused of is 20 years.

Russia usually concludes legal proceedings against foreigners before making any deals on exchanging them for Russians held abroad.

Gershkovich, his newspaper and the U.S. government all rejected the allegations against him and said he was merely doing his job as a reporter accredited by the Foreign Ministry to work in Russia.

"Even as Russia orchestrates its shameful sham trial, we continue to do everything we can to push for Evan's immediate release," the Journal said in a statement on Thursday.

The U.S. embassy, also on Thursday, said: "Regardless of what Russian authorities claim, Evan is a journalist. He did not commit any illegal actions. Russian authorities have been unable to provide evidence that he committed a crime or justification for Evan's continued detention."

State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel on Thursday declined to speak publicly about negotiations on a prisoner exchange, but said Washington was seeking the release of Gershkovich and another jailed American, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, as soon as possible.

The Kremlin said the case and the trial arrangements were matters for the court. The Kremlin has stated in the past - without publishing evidence - that Gershkovich was caught spying "red-handed".

U.S. officials have repeatedly accused Russia of using Gershkovich and Whelan as bargaining chips for a possible prisoner exchange.

Washington considers both men "wrongfully detained" and says it is committed to bringing them home.

President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is open to a prisoner exchange involving Gershkovich and that contacts with the United States have taken place but must remain secret.

Since Russian troops entered Ukraine in 2022, Moscow and Washington have conducted just one high profile prisoner swap: Russia released basketball star Brittney Griner, held for smuggling cannabis, in return for arms dealer Viktor Bout, jailed for terrorism-related offences in the United States.

Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Amina Augie and some senior lawyers have decried the growing practice of indecent dressing by female lawyers in the country.

Justice Augie, former Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in Sokoto state, Suleiman Usman (SAN) and a member of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF), Hajia Mohammed Adama expressed concern that female lawyers no longer dress decently.

They spoke in Abuja on Friday, July 19, at an event organised by the Abuja chapter of the NBAWF, with the theme: “Indecent dressing: Its effect on female lawyers dress code.”

Justice Augie, who featured as the keynote speaker, urged lawyers to see themselves as an important part of somebody else’s life.

She said lawyers should dress in a way that inspire confidence, “because you are supposed to be presentable when you are representing your client.

“When you come before me as a lawyer and you are not properly dressed, no one will tell you to dress well by the time you are appearing before me again, because I will also talk to your principal about why he allowed you to leave the chambers without being properly dressed.

“As a lawyer, you need to know who you are, because it is when you identify who you are that you will be able to instil confidence in others and your client.

“No lawyer dress indecently in my court that I spare. As a lawyer, we should be disciplined, so that when you say you are a lawyer, you can instil confidence in others so that when you speak, they’ll listen to you,” Justice Augie said.

Usman argued that any lawyer who is indecently dressed should not be given an audience by any court.

The former Attorney General of Sokoto State said a lawyer who is indecently dressed in court is setting a bad precedence for those coming behind.

He added: “To be properly dressed as a lawyer is very important because it says a lot about who you are.

“It could lead to disciplinary action because the bad conduct of any lawyer could rub off on others.

“For a lawyer to be respected and win the confidence and trust of his client, he must decently present himself,” he said.

Hajia Adama called on parents to be good examples to their daughters.

She added that, as lawyers and mothers, members of the forum are expected to instil good values in the younger ones.

Hajia Adama said: “We are lawyers and we impact positively in the society and the society looks up to us as well.

“So, we must conduct ourselves in a manner that is acceptable, including our dressing.

“You will agree with me that with what you see on the internet daily, our societal value is eroding and we can allow that to creep into the legal profession.

“The legal profession is a noble one and we can allow indecent dressing to impact negatively on the good name the, profession has earned many years ago,” she said.
