GOV ENO REASSURES A'IBOMITES OF GLORIOUS SECOND YEAR

GOV ENO REASSURES A'IBOMITES OF GLORIOUS SECOND YEAR

By Anietie Edet

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has expressed optimism that the second year of his administration will be glorious and prosperous

The Governor gave the assurance while addressing congregants on the third and final day of the government-backed Prayer Summit, organised by the State Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria ( CAN) and Fathers in Faith for Good Governance held at the International Christian Worship Center, Uyo, with the theme, "From Glory to Glory".

Expressing gratitude over the contributions and commitment of different people to the success of the spiritually-stimulating event, Governor Eno thanked the organisers, Akwa Ibom Christian community, youths and all for holding hands in prayers, thanking God and handing over the affairs of the government in the next one year to the Almighty.

He particularly appreciated the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the Senior Pastor of the Shepherd House, Reverend Joshua Talena, Apostle Emmanuel Kure of the Throneroom Ministry and other clerics who availed themselves to minister to the State and its people.

Reflecting on his first year in office, the Governor said only God deserved the glory for whatever achievements that his administration has recorded so far, affirming that only God could have made the 3-days gathering such a success.

In his words, "Our presence here these three days means that we agree in totality to commit our ways to God and we are emboldened. We are here for the growth of Akwa Ibom, all of us in our different areas, we trust and believe in God that after these three days, God's hand will be evident on Akwa Ibom State.

"He has helped us in the first year. If we did anything at all, if we touched any life at all, the glory should return to God and we lay our crowns before him, because no man can do anything of his own accord. It is not in man to do anything good, so we return glory to God."

According to him, the three days gathering signals the beginning of the second year of his administration and a rededication of the State Government, assuring that God will do even more than he did in the previous year in leading the State in righteousness and establishing his glory over the land to prosper it.

"We have also come these three days to say to him Lord, do much more for us. Our eyes are on you. We have no help except from you. So, we asked him these three days as a state to lead us, to guide us and to teach us.

"Our state will prosper and we will live aright. We will live with the fear of God and we will live in righteousness. That is our prayer, that's our desire and I know that God Almighty will bring all these to fruition because we have started with him, because His name is at stake over Akwa Ibom and I know that God will defend his name," the Governor stated.

In his message on the theme of the summit, "From glory to glory", the guest minister, Apostle Dr Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, Founder/President of Throneroom (Trust) Ministry Kaduna, noted that glory is the very essence of the life of God that beautifies everything.

Making reference to some major happenings in the country in particular, and around the world as a whole, he said God is deliberately interfering with history and people, and cutting off the legs of the wicked ones.

Apostle Nuhu Kure who said It's only God that brings people into glory urged Christians to always seek the face of God for His glory.

He commended the Governor for beginning his second year with God, assured that the State will continue to grow from glory glory .

His mom asked to turn the Playstation volume down. He decided to stab her 22 times instead

“This is, as I said, in my more than a decade on the bench, one of the most brutal murders that I’ve presided over”

A New Hampshire man will spend at least 40 years in prison for killing his mom and setting her remains on fire after she asked him to turn down the volume of his PlayStation.

Thomas Humphrey, 47, was given the 40 to life sentence this week after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He also pleaded guilty to felony arson for burning the remains and was sentenced to five to ten years. The sentences will run back-to-back.

On Dec. 4, 2023, Humphrey was playing the PlayStation that his mom Linda Tufts, 70, had given him as a birthday gift, according to Law & Crime. The two got into an argument over the volume when Humphrey got angry and stabbed his mom 22 times.

After the stabbing, Humphrey lit his mother’s remains on fire inside their Goffstown, New Hampshire, home.

Humphrey had been living in his mom’s basement at the time of the attack.

First responders were called to the home around 2:20pm for a small fire. After they put out the blaze, they found Tufts dead in the home from the stab wounds.

Police also found Humphrey inside the home holding the knife, according to the report. He appeared to have self-inflicted stab wounds. Humphrey was taken to the hospital before he was charged with his mom’s murder.

Neighbors told local media that Humphrey had been kicked out of the house and was only allowed to return shortly before the attack. Humphrey’s father was at work when the killing happened.

New Hampshire Superior Court Judge N. William Delker blasted the killer as he sentenced him to decades behind bars.

“This is, as I said, in my more than a decade on the bench, one of the most brutal murders that I’ve presided over,” he said. “The brutality of this crime simply makes it too dangerous not to impose a very lengthy state prison sentence.”

He has not yet been officially identified, but the police say they are “reasonably certain” of his identity.

“The police are investigating the case as a fall accident,” Thommesen told CNN. “We have no assumptions that anything criminal has happened.”

Two witnesses were questioned on Monday, including one who saw the incident happen. He explained that the man slipped and fell.

Although it is “the most iconic natural landmark in Norway,” according to the non-profit which manages the site, Preikestolen grew in fame when it was featured in the sixth “Mission Impossible” film, starring Tom Cruise.

It was used as a filming location – doubling for Kashmir – in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” for an action sequence at the end of the 2018 film, where the film’s two central characters fall off the cliff.

For the premiere of the film, 2,000 people hiked 4 kilometres (2.4 miles) to the cliff to see it projected by lasers at night. Cruise praised the premiere, calling it “the most impossible screening” of the film.

The film was expected to have a positive impact on the area and local tourism, according to the Preikestolen non-profit, who work to preserve the area and keep it safe for visitors.

House of Representatives Knocked organised Labour leadership on propagated misinformation regarding the earnings of lawmakers.

The House of Representatives has attacked organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, for feeding the public about what it described as “fake earnings” of its members.

The House of Representatives has attacked organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, for feeding the public about what it described as “fake earnings” of its members.

It said that the attempt was made to stoke public resentment against the lawmakers and undermine the credibility of the legislature.

It warned that such acts could stoke public resentment against lawmakers and undermine the legislature’s credibility, calling for the actors sabotaging the nation’s economy to be brought to justice.

The House made this known in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, on Tuesday.

The statement read, “The House of Representatives acknowledges the recent industrial action undertaken by the NLC and the TUC due to the breakdown in negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

“The People’s House is pleased to note that the strike action has been suspended for one week to allow for further negotiation.

“During this period, as we have previously demonstrated, the People’s House remains responsive and committed to actively engaging all stakeholders to resolve the issues in the best interest of Nigerians.

“House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen has consistently advocated a living wage and better working conditions for workers.

“At various fora, he has emphasised the importance of addressing key national priorities, including the state of the economy and insecurity, through legislative action.

“While the Green Chamber is in full support of the call for improved wages and working conditions, there is a great need to exercise caution in increasing the minimum wage beyond what our economy can sustain to avoid unintended outcomes such as inflation, layoffs, and other adverse economic consequences.

“Thus, we restate the importance of approaching this issue from a balanced perspective to ensure long-term stability and prosperity for all.

“In the same vein, we observed with concern the direction of the strike action before its suspension and what it portends for the future.”

The House also condemned the shutdown of critical infrastructure, such as the national grid and airports, during the joint unions’ mandated strike.

“Importantly, the shutdown of critical infrastructure, such as the national grid, constitutes economic sabotage and is detrimental to the well-being of our country. Those responsible for these actions must be held accountable.

“We also find it troubling that the leadership of Organised Labour, the majority of who live far above the means of the average Nigerian, would engage in actions that exacerbate the suffering of ordinary citizens.

“It is necessary, therefore, to state that while industrial actions and dissent are fundamental rights within our democratic space that must be protected, the manner in which Labour conducted itself during the just-suspended strike largely shows a lack of empathy for Nigerians.

“Is the objective of the leadership of the unions to compel the government to implement a living wage or to inflict pain on Nigerians?

“Additionally, it is important to address persistent misinformation and disinformation propagated by organised Labour leadership regarding the earnings of lawmakers.

“This is especially because organised Labour has, for years, contributed to false narratives about the remuneration of members of the National Assembly, exaggerating figures to stoke public resentment and undermine the credibility of the Legislature.

“This tactic diverts attention from the core issues at stake and unfairly vilifies the institution of parliament. It is crucial for all parties to engage in an honest and transparent dialogue rather than resorting to the spread of inaccuracies for political leverage.

“Contrary to the insinuations of the Labour leadership through its social media platforms, the Legislature is on the side of Nigerians and will continue to act in the best interest of our constituents – giving meaning to their mandate.

It further urged the union leadership to return to the negotiation table and engage other stakeholders in good faith to achieve a balanced and sustainable outcome.

A’Ibom schedules October 26 for LG elections

By Ernest Akpan

Akwa Ibom State has scheduled October 26th,2024 for elections into the 31 local government councils inthe state.

Governor Umo Eno made the announcement on Tuesday in Uyo during a stakeholders engagement meeting organized by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC).

Eno who was represented by the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Frank Archibong, also presented the election plan to representatives of political parties and other stakeholders.

His words, “This event is a precursor to all of the electoral activities that will ultimately culminate to 2024 local government elections.

“We are all aware that the governor assumed office May 29 last year and because of the shortness of time between May and December he was not able to conduct the local government elections which is why we have caretaker committees manning the local governments.

“I know how he has pressurized the AKISIEC to have the local government elections. Nothing stops us from having the elections this year because Akwa Ibom State and His Excellency do not want to be counted among those running caretaker committees”,

The governor assured that elected council chairman will be sworn in on December 7 in compliance with the electoral plan of the state.

According to the timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between July 22nd and August 26th 2024 while commencement of campaigns is on August 26 among other activities.

Speaking earlier the Chairman of AKISIEC, Aniedi Ikoiwak assured political parties of adequate security and a free and fair elections.

Ikoiwak said, “Given the critical importance of human and material security during elections, the Commission will take very practical measures to ensure there is adequate security before, during and after this year’s elections”.

JUST IN: We will pay Heritage Bank customers within one week – NDIC MD

Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has assured depositors of Heritage Bank it was already in the process of paying them.

The Managing Director of NDIC, Bello Hassan,  stated this at a briefing where he outlined the processes of repayment, insisting that the corporation will not take 30 days as stipulated by law but will settle customers within one week.

The Nation reported that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday, June 4, revoked the banking licence of Heritage Bank.

According to the CBN, the decision was due to the bank’s inability to improve its financial performance.

“The Board and Management of the bank have not been able to improve the bank’s financial performance, a situation which constitutes a threat to financial stability,” the CBN said.

However, the apex said Heritage Bank had not improved and “has no reasonable prospects of recovery”, thereby making revoking the licence the next necessary step.

You lied, we didn’t lose any baby’, Red Cross replies Enugu APC, Agballa

*Says ‘we have 14 children, not 100 as claimed‘

The Enugu State Chapter of the Nigeria Red Cross Society has faulted the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its Chairman, Ugo Agballa, on the claim that it lost a baby in the process of demolitions at Holy Ghost, Enugu, where the state government is clearing the old motor park and some properties to build a modern transport terminal.

It also faulted the claim that it had over 100 children at the time of the demolition, saying they had only 14 children who had all been safely and temporarily relocated to another orphanage in the state capital, asking to be left out of Enugu politics.

These rebuttals and clarifications were made by the Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross in Enugu, Tony Udegbu, in a telephone interview on Tuesday.

It is recalled that the Chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the APC, Chief Ugo Agballa, had on Monday addressed the press at Holy Ghost where he levelled several allegations on Governor Peter Mbah Administration over some of the development projects in the state.

But reacting to the development, the state scribe of the Red Cross, Udegbu, said, “It is not true that any child died. We are healthy. The governor relocated us and they are working on our new site. And we do not play background politics. The Red Cross is an impartial body all over the world. And the role we play is auxiliary to the government’s role. So, we want to be left out of politics because we are not a partisan organisation.

“We do no have anything near 100 children. They are 14. “What happened that time wash that they were renovating a place for us at the old UNTH road.

But that place was not ready when they came with a bulldozer. But when the governor got to know about the reality, he relocated the babies to Ken David’s Orphanage Home and they are working on that permanent place right now.

“So, by the grace of God, His Excellency, the Governor, has since relocated the babies to an orphanage they call Ken David’s Orphanage Home. And the children are there temporarily until they finish the new place.

“I thank the governor for taking a decisive action by making the babies comfortable when he got to know the truth.

“The governor is the Patron of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Enugu Branch, by the Nigerian Red Cross Act 1960. So, those babies are his own too,” the Red Cross said

THE SOUTHERN POST reports that the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has ordered immediate reclamation of all trespassed portions of the 82- hectare landed property acquired for the Ibom Tropicana Entertainment Centre, as he moves to complete the moribund and uncompleted parts of the facility.

Governor Eno gave the indication while undertaking an inspection tour of the theme park, the 14 - storey Tropicana hotel building and the 5000 - capacity Conference facility at the Ibom Tropicana Entertainment Centre, Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo.

The Governor who had earlier held a re-evaluation meeting with major contractors on the project, said the visit was informed by his resolve to attend to critical infrastructure that have potentials to grow the State's economy.

He explained that his drive to reclaim the facility was also in furtherance of his pledge to complete uncompleted projects initiated by previous administrations and make them functional.

"We have resolved to put the past behind us. We have structures on ground, what I'm doing now is to see all of the vision, what it was all about, how we can link them together and how we can revive it. This can give several thousands of jobs to Akwa Ibomites.

"We've been trying to create a theme park at the Udo Udoma Cenotaph but seeing what we have here, why do I need to duplicate? Why do I have to start something new when we have something here we can build on," he stated.

THE SOUTHERN POST Nigeria gathered that the Governor Eno therefore directed the Commissioner for Lands, Captain Iniobong Ekong, (rtd.) to avail him with the survey plan of the entire land area that was acquired by Government for the project, with intent to sack trespassers and bring down illegal structures.

He also directed the Ministry of Special Duties to ensure the cleaning of the entire area, and the Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways, General Koko Essien, (rtd.), to immediately take over the security of the entire facility, sounding a warning to vandals and hoodlums to stay off the facility as Government will not hesitate to prosecute any violator on the facility henceforth.

"This is Akwa Ibom money and so my duty as Governor is to protect the assets of Government, life and property of the people. Government has sunk in so much money here and so I believe we can look at it.

After touring the hold facilities in Tropicana Project, the Governor made his position known, sayings,

"For me, what is important, going forward, is how we can reclaim this place and make it functional. Behind us is an International Conference Centre.  People come here for conferences and conventions. I understand we were named Tourists State of the Year 2023, and when people see your efforts and  recognize you for doing something, it means they expect more from you," Governor Eno added.

In the Governor's  team were the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, Commissioner for Special Duties, Engineer Bassey Okon, Commissioner for Lands, Captain Iniobong Ekong (rtd), as well as  contractors for the project, and consultant.
